Strategic Reuse and Product Line Engineering

With the growing complexity of many products and intensifying competitive pressures, the need for engineering development efficiencies is increasing. This is true across many industries, such as air, land, or sea vehicles, medical devices, and consumer electronic devices, to name a few. In all of these industries, delivery of multiple products sharing common elements is standard practice, resulting in product lines or product families. Reuse of assets across a product line or family is a major efficiency improvement for easing product design pressures.

There are many ways to reuse assets; some ways may not be as efficient as others, but it makes sense to utilize existing work. When a company reapplies assets and technology to new projects, a subsequent change to an asset in one place is often not propagated cleanly and efficiently in all the places where the asset is used. Duplication of work is likely if there are not processes and tools in place to automate reuse.

The IBM Rhapsody Kit for DO-178B/C

The IBM Solution for Aerospace and Defense - DO-178B/C is a set of best practices to help organizations develop products for certification under the DO-178B and DO-178C safety critical standards. The scope of these practices covers the 5 main processes described by DO-178B/C, concerning Planning, Development, Verification, Configuration Management and Quality Assurance. They have been developed to support incremental adoption, thereby accelerating the adoption of common process support, practices and tools so as to reduce the time to value for the client’s process improvement initiatives.

Engineering Lifecycle Management with AI

IBM Engineering for Aerospace Devices consists of a set of process assets (modifiable by the customer using ELO -  Method Composer (ex RMC ) ), which include workflows deployable in Engineering Workflow Management. It also includes a DOORS project template for medical devices, which contains pre-defined DOORS modules that users can instantiate to deploy DOORS more quickly in projects required to comply with FDA QSR and IEC 62304. The DOORS modules contain a set of defined attributes for the various stages of development in the safety lifecycle, including specification, design, implementation, integration, verification, validation, and production release. A version of this template is also available for DOORS Next Generation.

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis

IBM Rational software provides Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) feature set. This enables the product development team to identify, define, and control the mitigation of risks, while ensuring traceability between requirements, failure modes, and test cases.

IBM provides out of the box FMEA extension for IBM Jazz Platform which is installed in /RM component. Extension enables users to:

  • Choose attributes like probability, severity, impact
  • Automated or manual calculation of risk priority number (RPN)
  • Linking of FMEA artifacts to affected requirements and to mitigation requirements
  • Out of the box Gap Analysis

  • Choose attributes like probability, severity, impact
  • Automated or manual calculation of risk priority number (RPN)
  • Linking of FMEA artifacts to affected requirements and to mitigation requirements
  • Out of the box Gap Analysis

With help of Softacus FMEA extension we are also able to:

  • Compare RPN before and after mitigation
  • Color-code RPN based on the value
  • Adjust the FMEA calculation to any of your needs

   Hazard Analysis

   Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)

A deductive (top-down) approach that links causal factors (e.g. faults, conditions, and events) together via logic operators to create hazards. Is recommended in requirements, systems analysis, and design phases.

  • Traceable links among requirements, Traceable links among requirements, analysis, design, and safety elements make your “safety case”.
  • FTA elements can have traceable, navigable links to– Requirements– Elements that can manifest faults– Elements that can detect faults– Elements that handle faults.
  • FTA elements contain metadata– Severity– Likelihood– MTBF– Risk– Safety Integrity Level.
  • UML Fault Tree Analysis Profile.
  • Fault Means, Effect, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) .

An inductive (bottom-up) approach that relates component faults with hazards. Cannot be applied until you have a parts list, which is late in the development process.
  • Security Analysis Diagram.

UML Profile for modeling cybersecurity, threats, and countermeasures.
